My Therapeutic Approach

Distraction is a coping skill that most people utilize from time to time in order to avoid feeling negative emotional states. Sometimes people distract themselves in ways that can cause more negativity and often exacerbate the actual problem. These ways of escaping can involve the use of alcohol, drugs, and other process addictions. The goal in session is two fold: help clarify and untangle the reasons for seeking distraction in the first place so the real issue can be identified and resolved. Then help develop new, more effective coping mechanisms to utilize in the future.
